Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 package (3.4 ounces) instant vanilla pudding
  • 2 cups cold milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 4 egg whites
  • 1/3 cup sugar

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a medium bowl, cream together the butter and sugar. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt; stir into the creamed mixture alternately with the milk. Spread evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the pudding mix and 2 cups cold milk until thick. Spread over the cake layer.
  4. In a large glass or metal bowl, beat egg whites and cream of tartar until soft peaks form. Gradually add the sugar and beat until stiff peaks form. Spread over the pudding layer.
  5. Bake for 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden brown.
