Ingredients
2 cups of lukewarm water
1/2 cup of sugar
2 packages of active dry yeast
6 tablespoons of vegetable oil
2 tablespoons of salt
8 eggs
7-8 cups of all-purpose flour
Directions
In a large bowl, combine the lukewarm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir to combine and let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
Add the oil, salt, and eggs and stir to combine.
Add the flour, 1 cup at a time, stirring to combine after each addition. Continue adding flour until the dough is no longer sticky.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 10 minutes.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
Punch the dough down and knead for 5 minutes.
Divide the dough into 3 equal pieces and roll each piece into a long rope.
Braid the 3 ropes of dough together.
Place the braided dough on a greased baking sheet and let rise for 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Brush the challah with a beaten egg and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
Cool on a wire rack before serving.
Interesting Facts
Challah is a traditional Jewish bread that is usually served on Shabbat or other special occasions.
The word “challah” comes from the Hebrew word “hallah,” which means “portion” or “loaf.”
Challah is usually braided into a three-stranded braid, but can also be shaped into other forms such as circles or spirals.
Challah is usually made with eggs for extra richness and flavor.
