In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Add cubed butter to the flour mixture and use a pastry blender or two knives to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture looks like coarse meal.
Stir in the walnuts.
In a separate bowl, mix together maple syrup, cream or milk, and egg.
Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix just until combined.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead a few times to form a ball.
Pat the dough into a circle about 1-inch thick.
Cut the dough into 8 wedges and transfer to an ungreased baking sheet.
Bake for 13-15 minutes or until the scones are lightly browned.
