Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. Place one slice of bread in the skillet, butter side down.
Crack an egg onto the bread in the skillet. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, to taste.
Place the other slice of bread on top of the egg, butter side up. Cook until the egg is cooked through and the bread is golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side.
Carefully flip the sandwich over and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes.
Serve hot.
