Ingredients
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 cup warm milk
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Directions
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized, stirring occasionally. This should take about 20 minutes. Set aside and let cool.
- In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until the yeast is foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the sugar, salt, and flour. Add the yeast mixture and cooled caramelized onions. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
- Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a loaf pan with olive oil.
- Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it into the greased loaf pan. Brush the top with the beaten egg.
- Cover the loaf pan with a kitchen towel and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
- Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown on top and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 5 minutes. Then transfer it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- Slice and serve the homemade onion bread with butter or as a side to your favorite meals.
