Ingredients

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Directions

  1. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized, stirring occasionally. This should take about 20 minutes. Set aside and let cool.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until the yeast is foamy.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sugar, salt, and flour. Add the yeast mixture and cooled caramelized onions. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
  4. Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a loaf pan with olive oil.
  7. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it into the greased loaf pan. Brush the top with the beaten egg.
  8. Cover the loaf pan with a kitchen towel and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown on top and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  10. Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 5 minutes. Then transfer it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Slice and serve the homemade onion bread with butter or as a side to your favorite meals.
