In a large bowl, cream together the butter, brown sugar, and white sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla. Combine the flour, baking soda, and salt; stir into the creamed mixture alternately with the orange juice and zest. Fold in the dates and walnuts. Spread evenly in the prepared baking dish.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the top is lightly browned and the center is set. Cool completely in the pan before frosting.
In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth. Gradually beat in the orange juice until the mixture is of a spreadable consistency. Spread over the cooled bars.
Cut into bars and serve.
