Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the garlic, ginger, onion, carrots and celery and sauté for 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened.
Add the Chinese 5-spice powder and sauté for 1 minute more.
Add the vegetable broth, sea salt and black pepper and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
Add the maple syrup, soy sauce, sesame seeds and cilantro and simmer for 5 minutes more.
Serve warm.
