Ingredients

  • 1 pound thinly sliced beef (sirloin or ribeye)
  • 1 large onion
  • 4 ounces shiitake mushrooms
  • 2 cups Napa cabbage
  • 1 package of firm tofu
  • 2 green onions
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup mirin
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 cups cooked rice, for serving

Directions

  1. Cut the onion into thin slices, and separate the layers.
  2. Remove the stems from the shiitake mushrooms and slice them.
  3. Cut the Napa cabbage into bite-sized pieces.
  4. Drain the tofu and cut it into cubes.
  5. Slice the green onions into small pieces, separating the white and green parts.
  6. In a small bowl, mix together the soy sauce, mirin, and sugar to make the sauce.
  7. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium heat.
  8. Add the onion and sauté until it becomes translucent.
  9. Add the beef slices and cook until they are browned.
  10. Add the shiitake mushrooms and cook for another 2 minutes.
  11. Add the Napa cabbage and cook until it wilts.
  12. Stir in the tofu and white parts of the green onions.
  13. Pour the sauce over the mixture and cook for another 2 minutes.
  14. Garnish with the green parts of the green onions.
  15. Serve the fake sukiyaki over cooked rice.
