Sloppy Bulgogi is a fusion dish that combines the bold flavors of Korean bulgogi with the comforting, messy goodness of the classic American sloppy joe. This recipe takes tender marinated beef, sautéed with onions and garlic, then smothered in a sweet and savory bulgogi sauce. Serve it on a soft hamburger bun for the ultimate messy and flavorful sandwich experience. Perfect for a weeknight dinner or a crowd-pleasing party dish, this Sloppy Bulgogi will surely satisfy your cravings for both Korean and American flavors.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound beef sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine or mirin
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 hamburger buns

Directions

  1. In a bowl, combine the soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, minced garlic, grated ginger, rice wine, and cornstarch. Mix well until the sugar has dissolved.
  2. Place the sliced beef in a shallow dish and pour the marinade over it. Toss the beef to coat it evenly with the marinade. Let it marinate for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated beef and cook until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the beef from the skillet and set it aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  5. Return the cooked beef to the skillet with the onions. Pour in the water and stir in the cornstarch mixture.
  6. Cook the mixture for another 2-3 minutes or until the sauce has thickened.
  7. Split the hamburger buns and lightly toast them. Place a generous amount of the sloppy bulgogi mixture on the bottom half of each bun. Top with the other half of the bun.
  8. Serve the Sloppy Bulgogi immediately and enjoy the delicious fusion of Korean and American flavors!
