Ingredients
- 1 pound (450g) of phyllo (filo) pastry sheets
- 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, melted
- 2 cups (230g) walnuts, finely chopped
- 1 cup (115g) almonds, finely chopped
- 1 cup (115g) pistachios, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 cup (240ml) water
- 1 cup (240ml) honey
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
- In a mixing bowl, combine the finely chopped walnuts, almonds, pistachios, sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Set aside.
- Brush a baking dish with melted butter.
- Lay one sheet of phyllo pastry on the bottom of the dish and brush it with melted butter. Repeat this process, layering and buttering each sheet of phyllo until you have used about half of the sheets.
- Spread half of the nut mixture evenly over the layered phyllo sheets.
- Continue layering the remaining phyllo sheets, brushing each one with melted butter.
- Spread the remaining nut mixture over the top layer of phyllo sheets.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square-shaped pieces.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 40-45 minutes, or until the baklava turns golden brown and crispy.
- While the baklava is baking, prepare the honey syrup. In a saucepan, combine the water, honey, lemon juice, and vanilla extract. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool.
- Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and pour the cooled honey syrup evenly over the hot baklava.
- Let the baklava cool completely and absorb the syrup before serving. This will usually take a few hours.
- Serve the baklava as a decadent dessert or a sweet treat with a cup of hot coffee or tea.
