Ingredients

  • 1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • Black gel food coloring
  • White fondant
  • Black edible gel pen or food coloring
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake tin with cupcake liners.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until well combined.
  4. Slowly pour in the boiling water while stirring the batter. The batter will be thin, but that's normal.
  5. Fill each cupcake liner about 2/3 full with batter.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean.
  7. Remove the cupcakes from the oven and allow them to cool completely.
  8. While the cupcakes are cooling, prepare the decorations. Divide the white fondant into small pieces for each skull shape.
  9. Shape each piece of fondant into a skull shape by rolling it between your palms.
  10. Once all the skulls are shaped, use the black edible gel pen or food coloring to draw spooky details like eyes, nose, and teeth on each fondant skull.
  11. When the cupcakes are fully cooled, apply a thin layer of black gel food coloring on top of each cupcake to give it a dark, spooky appearance.
