  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 4 green onions, chopped
  • Cooked rice, for serving

Directions

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.
  2. Add the onion, bell peppers, and celery, and cook until the vegetables are softened, stirring occasionally.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, chicken or vegetable broth, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, paprika, thyme, oregano, cayenne pepper, salt, black pepper, and bay leaf to the pot.
  5. Stir well to combine all the ingredients.
  6. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low.
  7. Cover the pot and let it simmer for about 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
  8. Meanwhile, prepare the shrimp by seasoning them with salt and pepper.
  9. After the 30 minutes, add the seasoned shrimp to the pot and stir to coat them in the sauce.
  10. Continue cooking uncovered for an additional 5-7 minutes or until the shrimp are cooked through.
  11. Remove the bay leaf from the pot.
