Ingredients

  • 2 cups dried chickpeas, soaked overnight
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, pureed
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • Fresh cilantro, for garnish

Directions

  1. Drain and rinse the soaked chickpeas. In a pressure cooker, add the chickpeas along with enough water to cover them. Cook for about 10-12 whistles or until the chickpeas are soft and tender. Set aside.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and add the cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
  3. Add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  4. Add the ginger-garlic paste and green chilies. Sauté for a minute.
  5. Add the tomato puree and cook until the oil separates from the mixture.
  6. Add the turmeric powder, coriander powder, garam masala, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well.
  7. Add the cooked chickpeas along with the water they were cooked in. Mix everything together and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes on low heat.
  8. Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot with rice or naan bread.
