Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, minced
  • 1 small green bell pepper, minced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 8 hot dog buns
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Pickles, diced onions, or other desired toppings

Directions

  1. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Add the minced onion, green bell pepper, and garlic to the skillet. Cook until the vegetables are softened.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  4. Pour the sauce over the beef mixture in the skillet. Stir well to combine. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes, until the flavors meld together.
  5. While the sloppy joe mixture is simmering, preheat the broiler.
  6. Open the hot dog buns and place them on a baking sheet. Place under the broiler for 1-2 minutes, until toasted.
  7. Remove the buns from the oven and evenly distribute the sloppy joe mixture onto each bun. Sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese.
  8. Return the loaded buns to the broiler for another 1-2 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Remove from the broiler and top with desired toppings such as diced pickles, onions, or any other condiments.
  10. Serve immediately and enjoy!
