Ingredients
- 2 large Vidalia onions
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup buttermilk
- Oil for deep frying
Directions
- Peel the onions and trim the ends. Slice off a 1/2 inch from the top and bottom of each onion.
- Place the onion upright on the flat side and make a downward cut about 1/4 inch from the center, going only about 3/4 of the way down.
- Rotate the onion 90 degrees and make another cut next to the first one.
- Repeat the process until you have made 8 cuts around the onion, forming petals.
- In a shallow dish, mix together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
- Dip each onion in buttermilk and then coat it with the flour mixture, making sure to get the crumbs inside the petals.
- Fill a large pot or deep fryer with oil and heat it to 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully place the coated onions, one at a time, into the hot oil and fry until golden brown and crispy, about 4-5 minutes.
- Remove the onions from the oil and drain them on a paper towel-lined plate.
- Serve the flowering Vidalia onions hot as an appetizer or side dish. They are best enjoyed when dipped in your favorite sauce.
