Indulge in the sweet and nutty flavors of this American twist on the classic baklava. Layers of flaky phyllo dough, buttery nuts, and aromatic spices come together to create a mouthwatering dessert that will impress your friends and family.
Ingredients
- 1 package of phyllo dough
- 1 cup of melted butter
- 2 cups of mixed nuts (such as walnuts, pistachios, and almonds)
- 1 cup of sugar
- 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg
- 1/2 cup of honey
- 1/4 cup of water
Directions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- In a food processor, pulse the mixed nuts until finely chopped.
- In a bowl, mix together the chopped nuts, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Brush a baking dish with melted butter.
- Layer 5 sheets of phyllo dough in the dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
- Sprinkle a generous amount of the nut mixture over the phyllo.
- Continue layering phyllo and nut mixture until all ingredients are used, ending with a top layer of phyllo.
- Score the top layer of phyllo into diamond or square shapes with a sharp knife.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown.
- While the baklava is baking, make the honey syrup. In a saucepan, combine honey and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
- Once the baklava is done baking, pour the hot syrup over the top, allowing it to soak into the layers.
- Let the baklava cool completely before serving. Enjoy!
