Enjoy a restaurant-style chicken katsu dish right at home with this easy-to-follow air fryer recipe. The chicken is coated in a crunchy panko breadcrumb crust and air fried to perfection, resulting in a tender and crispy chicken cutlet. Serve it with a side of tangy tonkatsu sauce, steamed rice, and a fresh salad for a complete and satisfying meal. This healthier version of the classic Japanese dish will surely become a family favorite!

Ingredients

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • Cooking spray
  • Tonkatsu sauce, for serving
  • Steamed rice, for serving
  • Fresh salad, for serving

Directions

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 5 minutes.
  2. Place the chicken breasts between two sheets of plastic wrap and gently pound them to an even thickness, about 1/2 inch.
  3. Season both sides of the chicken breasts with salt and pepper.
  4. Set up a breading station with three shallow bowls. In the first bowl, place the flour. In the second bowl, add the beaten eggs. In the third bowl, place the panko breadcrumbs.
  5. Dredge each chicken breast in the flour, shaking off any excess. Dip the chicken into the beaten eggs, allowing any excess to drip off. Finally, coat the chicken in the panko breadcrumbs, pressing firmly to adhere the crumbs.
  6. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the breaded chicken breasts in a single layer in the basket, without overcrowding.
  7. Spray the top of the chicken breasts with cooking spray.
  8. Air fry the chicken at 400°F (200°C) for 12-15 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and cooked through. The internal temperature should reach 165°F (74°C).
  9. Remove the chicken from the air fryer and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing.
  10. Serve the chicken katsu with tonkatsu sauce, steamed rice, and a fresh salad. Enjoy!
