Ingredients

  • For the Chocolate Cake:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • For the Strawberry Filling:
  • 4 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • For the Whipped Cream:
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the Garnish:
  • Fresh strawberries
  • Chocolate shavings

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well.
  3. Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in the boiling water. The batter will be thin, but that's okay.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. While the cakes are cooling, prepare the strawberry filling. In a medium bowl, combine sliced strawberries and granulated sugar. Mix well and let the strawberries macerate for about 20 minutes.
  9. In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
  10. Once the cakes have cooled, place one cake layer on a serving plate or cake stand.
  11. Spread half of the strawberry filling evenly over the cake layer.
  12. Top with a generous amount of whipped cream.
  13. Place the second cake layer on top and repeat the filling and whipped cream layers.
  14. Garnish the top with fresh strawberries and chocolate shavings.
  15. Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld together.
  16. Slice and serve chilled.
  17. Enjoy the indulgent delight of chocolate strawberry shortcake!
