Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 egg yolk, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Sesame seeds (optional, for topping)

Directions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Mix well.
  2. Add the warm water, milk, eggs, and melted butter to the dry ingredients. Stir until a dough forms.
  3. Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. After the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles. Divide the dough into 3 equal portions.
  6. Roll each portion into a long rope, about 18 inches in length. Braid the ropes together and pinch the ends to seal.
  7. Place the braided dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover it with a damp cloth and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Brush the top of the bread with the beaten egg yolk and sprinkle sesame seeds on top if desired.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until the bread turns golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  11. Remove from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing. Enjoy!
