Whimpies, also known as Sloppy Joes, are a classic American comfort food that is loved by both kids and adults. This recipe combines ground beef simmered in a flavorful sauce and served on soft hamburger buns. It's a quick and easy dish to prepare, perfect for a weeknight dinner or a casual get-together with friends. In just under 30 minutes, you can have a delicious meal that will satisfy even the pickiest eaters.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion, finely diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 hamburger buns

Directions

  1. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Add the diced onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook for 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the ketchup, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and black pepper. Pour the mixture into the skillet with the ground beef and vegetables. Stir to combine.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and simmer the mixture for 15-20 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened.
  5. While the mixture simmers, toast the hamburger buns under the broiler or in a toaster oven.
  6. Once the sauce has thickened, remove the skillet from the heat. Spoon the beef mixture onto the bottom half of each toasted bun. Top with the other half of the bun.
  7. Serve the Whimpies immediately and enjoy!
