Tonkatsu is a beloved dish in Japan, consisting of breaded and deep-fried pork cutlets served with a tangy tonkatsu sauce. This recipe will guide you through the process of making perfectly crispy and flavorful tonkatsu at home. The pork cutlets are tenderized, coated in seasoned breadcrumbs, and fried to golden perfection. Serve alongside steamed rice, shredded cabbage, and a drizzle of tonkatsu sauce for a satisfying and comforting meal.

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless pork loin chops
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Tonkatsu sauce, for serving
  • Shredded cabbage, for serving
  • Steamed rice, for serving

Directions

  1. Start by tenderizing the pork cutlets. Place each pork chop between two pieces of plastic wrap and use a meat mallet or rolling pin to pound them until they are about 1/4-inch thick.
  2. Season the pork cutlets with salt and pepper on both sides.
  3. Set up a breading station with three shallow bowls. In the first bowl, place the flour. In the second bowl, beat the eggs. In the third bowl, add the panko breadcrumbs.
  4. Dredge each pork cutlet in the flour, shaking off any excess. Dip it into the beaten eggs, allowing any excess to drip off. Finally, press the cutlet into the panko breadcrumbs, making sure it is evenly coated on both sides. Repeat with the remaining pork cutlets.
  5. In a large skillet, heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the breaded pork cutlets into the skillet. Fry for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until the cutlets are golden brown and cooked through.
  6. Transfer the cooked tonkatsu to a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
  7. Slice the tonkatsu into thin strips and serve it with tonkatsu sauce, shredded cabbage, and steamed rice.
  8. Enjoy the crispy and delicious tonkatsu!
