Perfect for breakfast, brunch, or as a dessert, this coffee cake is a beloved American classic that will satisfy any sweet tooth. The addition of sour cream in the batter gives this cake a rich and tangy flavor while keeping it incredibly moist. It's a crowd-pleaser that will have everyone coming back for seconds.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • For the streusel topping:
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and baking soda. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the sour cream. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing well after each addition.
  6. In a small bowl, combine the ingredients for the streusel topping: flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, melted butter, and chopped nuts (if using). Mix until crumbly.
  7. Pour half of the cake batter into the prepared pan. Sprinkle half of the streusel topping evenly onto the batter. Spread the remaining batter over the streusel and top with the remaining streusel mixture.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow the coffee cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Slice and serve the sour cream coffee cake at room temperature. Enjoy!
