This classic patty melt recipe combines juicy beef patties, melted cheese, and sweet caramelized onions, all sandwiched between slices of toasted rye bread. It's a hearty and satisfying meal that's perfect for a cozy dinner at home.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 slices of rye bread
  • 8 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and shape them into patties.
  2. Season the patties with salt and pepper.
  3. In a large skillet, melt 2 tbsp of butter over medium heat.
  4. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized.
  5. Remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
  6. In the same skillet, cook the beef patties for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness.
  7. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  8. Spread the remaining butter on one side of each slice of rye bread.
  9. Place 4 slices of bread, butter side down, in the skillet.
  10. Top each slice with a beef patty, a spoonful of caramelized onions, and a slice of Swiss cheese.
  11. Place the remaining bread slices on top, butter side up.
  12. Cook the sandwiches for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  13. Slice the sandwiches in half and serve hot.
