The brioche has a light and fluffy texture with a slightly sweet flavor. Enjoy it fresh out of the oven or toasted with your favorite spread. Follow these simple steps for a perfect French brioche every time.

Ingredients

  • 500 grams (4 cups) all-purpose flour
  • 7 grams (2 1/4 tsp) instant yeast
  • 75 grams (1/3 cup) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 100 grams (7 tbsp) unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs, beaten
  • 120 ml (1/2 cup) whole milk, lukewarm
  • 1 egg yolk, beaten (for egg wash)

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Mix well.
  2. Add the softened butter and beaten eggs. Mix until well combined.
  3. Gradually add the lukewarm milk and knead the dough for 10-15 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  5. Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Divide it into equal portions and shape them into balls or place them in a greased loaf pan.
  6. For individual brioche buns, place the balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving enough space between each ball.
  7. Cover the shaped dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise for another 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until it puffs up.
  8. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  9. Brush the tops of the brioche with the beaten egg yolk to create a shiny glaze.
  10. Bake the brioche in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until they turn golden brown.
  11. Remove from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack before serving.
