Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup diced onions
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard

Directions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, diced onions, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  2. Shape the mixture into oval-shaped patties, about 3/4-inch thick.
  3. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add the thinly sliced onion and cook until softened and lightly caramelized, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the beef broth, all-purpose flour, tomato paste, and Dijon mustard until smooth.
  6. Pour the beef broth mixture into the skillet with the caramelized onions. Stir well to combine.
  7. Return the beef patties to the skillet and spoon some of the gravy over them. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy has thickened.
  8. Serve the Salisbury steak over mashed potatoes or buttered noodles, spooning plenty of the onion gravy over the top.
