In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Gradually add the half-and-half and stir until smooth. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and boils. Boil for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in the butter.
Beat the eggs in a small bowl. Gradually add 1 cup of the hot mixture, stirring constantly. Then, stir the egg mixture into the remaining hot mixture in the saucepan. Stir in the cocoa powder and vanilla.
Pour the mixture into the prepared crust. Arrange the banana slices over the top and sprinkle with the chocolate chips. Bake for 35 minutes, or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
Cool completely on a wire rack and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving. Top with whipped cream and enjoy!
