Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb Italian sausage, ground
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh oregano
  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh basil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • Salt to taste

Directions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the sausage and cook, stirring and breaking up any large pieces, until cooked through, about 8 minutes.
  3. Stir in the tomatoes, tomato paste, beef broth, oregano, basil, sugar, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is thickened, about 45 minutes.
