Ingredients

  • 1 lb boneless chicken, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 2 teaspoons ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 1 cup tomato puree
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro leaves, chopped for garnish
  • Cooked rice or naan bread, for serving

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine yogurt, lemon juice, cumin, coriander, turmeric, paprika, garam masala, chili powder, cinnamon, cardamom, and salt. Mix well to form a marinade.
  2. Add the chicken pieces to the marinade and coat them evenly. Let the chicken marinate for at least 30 minutes or up to overnight in the refrigerator.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until golden brown, about 5-6 minutes.
  4. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger to the skillet. Sauté for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  5. Add the tomato puree to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Reduce the heat to low and stir in the heavy cream. Simmer the sauce for 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  7. Meanwhile, preheat the grill or broiler to medium-high heat. Remove the chicken from the marinade and thread them onto skewers.
  8. Grill or broil the chicken skewers for 6-8 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are cooked through and slightly charred.
  9. Remove the cooked chicken from the skewers and transfer them to the skillet with the sauce. Simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  10. Garnish with chopped cilantro leaves and serve the chicken tikka masala with cooked rice or naan bread.
