Ingredients

  • 500 grams mutton, cut into pieces
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 4 tomatoes, pureed
  • 2 tablespoons ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 tablespoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon red chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/2 cup yogurt, whisked
  • 1/4 cup fresh coriander leaves, chopped
  • 4 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 cups water

Directions

  1. Heat oil in a large pot or pressure cooker over medium heat.
  2. Add onions and sauté until golden brown.
  3. Add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies. Sauté for another minute.
  4. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and cumin powder. Mix well.
  5. Add the mutton pieces and cook until they are browned on all sides.
  6. Add the tomato puree and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Add the whisked yogurt and mix well. Cook for another 5 minutes.
  8. Add salt and water. Stir well and bring the mixture to a boil.
  9. If using a pressure cooker, cover and cook for 20-25 minutes or until the mutton is tender.
  10. If using a regular pot, cover and simmer for 1.5-2 hours or until the mutton is tender.
  11. Once the mutton is tender, sprinkle garam masala and fresh coriander leaves on top.
  12. Serve hot with steamed basmati rice or naan bread.
