Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 teaspoons ground cardamom
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 to 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup chopped almonds
  • 1/4 cup chopped pistachios

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the sugar, butter, cardamom and salt.
  2. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes.
  3. Add the yeast mixture to the creamed mixture, stirring until combined.
  4. Beat in the eggs until well blended.
  5. Gradually stir in enough flour to make a soft dough.
  6. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until it is smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes.
  7. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning it to grease the top.
  8. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  9. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll into a 12-inch circle.
  10. Sprinkle with almonds and pistachios. Cut into 12 wedges.
  11. Roll up each wedge, starting at the wide end.
  12. Arrange the wedges in a greased 10-inch tube pan.
  13. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  14. Bake at 375° for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  15. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from the pan.
