Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- Red and blue food coloring
- 1 batch of vanilla frosting
Directions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Divide the batter equally into three bowls. Leave one bowl plain, and add a few drops of red food coloring to one bowl and blue food coloring to the other.
- Pour the red batter into one prepared cake pan, the plain batter into the other, and the blue batter into a piping bag fitted with a round tip.
- Pipe a ring of blue batter around the edge of the red batter in the pan. Carefully pour the plain batter in the center of the ring.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once the cakes are completely cooled, level the tops if necessary. Place one cake layer on a serving plate or cake stand.
- Spread a generous amount of vanilla frosting on top of the first layer. Place the second layer on top, and frost the entire cake with the remaining frosting.
- Decorate the top of the cake with red, white, and blue sprinkles or any other Independence Day-themed decorations.
