In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. In a large bowl, cream together butter and 1 1/2 cups sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients.
Roll dough into walnut sized balls, and roll the balls in remaining 1/2 cup of sugar. Place cookies 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets.
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
