Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Grease an 8 inch square baking pan.
In a medium bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, sugar, salt and baking powder. In a separate bowl, beat together egg, milk and oil. Stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients just until moistened.
Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cornbread comes out clean.
