Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/4 cup white sugar (for rolling)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Sift together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg, then stir in the molasses.
  5. Gradually stir the sifted ingredients into the molasses mixture.
  6. Shape dough into walnut sized balls, and roll them in the remaining 1/4 cup of sugar.
  7. Place the cookies 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet, and flatten slightly.
  8. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
