Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch square baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add to the creamed mixture alternately with the buttermilk, mixing until just combined.
  4. Stir in the walnuts. Spread the batter into the prepared pan.
  5. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
