Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease 8 muffin cups.
In a medium bowl, cream together the butter and 1/2 cup sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Combine the flour, baking powder and nutmeg; stir into the creamed mixture alternately with the milk.
Spoon batter into prepared muffin cups. Divide the strawberries between the muffin cups, and sprinkle with the remaining sugar.
Bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cake comes out clean.
