Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch square baking pan.
In a medium bowl, cream together butter and brown sugar until well blended. Beat in eggs and vanilla extract until light and creamy.
In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda and salt; gradually stir into the creamed mixture until just blended. Stir in the chopped nuts if desired.
Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in the preheated oven. For chewier brownies, remove from the oven when the edges are just starting to pull away from the sides of the pan and the top is still soft.
Cool in the pan before cutting into squares.
