Ingredients
- 2 packages (4.5 ounces each) active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water (105 to 115 degrees F)
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 cups warm milk (105 to 115 degrees F)
- 1/4 cup shortening
- 4 to 5 cups all-purpose flour
Directions
- In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water.
- Add the sugar, salt, milk, shortening and 2 cups of flour; beat until smooth.
- Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
- Turn onto a lightly floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes.
- Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top.
- Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
- Punch the dough down and turn onto a lightly floured surface.
- Divide into 24 pieces and roll into balls.
- Place in greased 13x9x2-inch baking pans.
- Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes.
- Bake at 375° for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
- Remove from pans to wire racks to cool.
