Ingredients

  • 2 packages (4.5 ounces each) active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water (105 to 115 degrees F)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 cups warm milk (105 to 115 degrees F)
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 4 to 5 cups all-purpose flour

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water.
  2. Add the sugar, salt, milk, shortening and 2 cups of flour; beat until smooth.
  3. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  4. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes.
  5. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top.
  6. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  7. Punch the dough down and turn onto a lightly floured surface.
  8. Divide into 24 pieces and roll into balls.
  9. Place in greased 13x9x2-inch baking pans.
  10. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes.
  11. Bake at 375° for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  12. Remove from pans to wire racks to cool.
