Ingredients

  • 1 block of firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons tamari or soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon sriracha or hot sauce
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Green onions and sesame seeds for garnish

Directions

  1. Press the tofu to remove excess moisture by placing it between two cutting boards and placing a heavy object on top. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together tamari or soy sauce, rice vinegar, maple syrup, sriracha or hot sauce, garlic, and ginger to make the teriyaki sauce.
  3. After draining the tofu, cut it into bite-sized cubes or rectangles.
  4. In a shallow dish, coat the tofu pieces with cornstarch, shaking off any excess.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat.
  6. Add the coated tofu to the skillet and cook until golden brown and crispy, turning occasionally to cook all sides evenly.
  7. Pour the teriyaki sauce over the cooked tofu and stir to coat each piece evenly.
  8. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the tofu.
  9. Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds.
  10. Serve the vegan spicy teriyaki tofu over steamed rice and enjoy!
