Wash the rice and soak it in water for 20 minutes.
Heat the oil and butter in a heavy-bottomed pan. Add the cumin seeds, garlic, ginger, and green chillies and sauté for a few seconds.
Add the chopped onions and sauté till they become golden brown.
Add the coriander powder, garam masala, turmeric powder and salt to taste. Sauté for a few more seconds.
Add the green peas and sauté for 1-2 minutes.
Drain the soaked rice and add it to the pan. Fry for a few minutes.
Add 2 cups of water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and cover the pan with a lid. Cook for 20-25 minutes till the rice is cooked and all the water is absorbed.
Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with raita or your favorite accompaniment.
