Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the rutabaga cubes and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the cubes are very tender.
Drain the rutabaga and return it to the pot. Add the butter, cream, salt, and pepper and mash with a potato masher until the desired consistency is reached.
If desired, add herbs and spices to the mashed rutabaga. Stir to combine and serve immediately.
