Heat the olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
Add the onion and garlic and sauté until the onion is soft and translucent, about 4 minutes.
Add the ketchup, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, chili powder, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Remove from the heat and allow to cool before serving.
