Ingredients

  • 1 pound dried navy beans
  • 1 pound smoked ham, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 bay leaf

Directions

  1. Rinse and sort the beans, removing any stones or debris. Soak the beans overnight in a large bowl of water.
  2. Drain the beans and set aside.
  3. Set the Instant Pot to the "saute" setting and add the diced ham. Cook until the ham is lightly browned, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add the garlic and onion and cook until the vegetables are softened, about 3 minutes.
  5. Add the drained beans, chicken broth, pepper, thyme, and bay leaf. Stir to combine.
  6. Secure the lid and seal the vent. Set the Instant Pot to the "manual" setting and cook for 25 minutes.
  7. When the timer is up, allow the pressure to release naturally for 10 minutes, then quick-release any remaining pressure.
  8. Stir the soup and adjust the seasoning, if desired.
  9. Serve the soup hot, with your favorite toppings.
