Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter, chilled and cubed
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 6-7 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the flour and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add the cold water, stirring until a dough forms.
  2. Divide the dough into two equal portions. Form each portion into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for one hour.
  3. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease a 9 inch pie pan.
  4. Roll out one of the dough portions on a lightly floured surface. Place it in the greased pie pan. Roll out the second portion of dough on a lightly floured surface. Cut it into strips and set aside.
  5. In a large bowl, toss together the apples, white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Spoon the mixture into the prepared pie pan.
  6. Arrange the reserved strips of dough in a lattice pattern over the top of the pie. Brush the top of the pie with melted butter.
  7. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
