This Fruited Sherry Bread is a delightful combination of sweet dried fruits soaked in sherry, mixed with a soft and fluffy bread dough. Perfect for breakfast or as a snack with a cup of tea, this recipe will surely become a favorite in your household.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup mixed dried fruits (such as raisins, cranberries, apricots)
  • 1/2 cup sherry
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup milk, warmed
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg

Directions

  1. In a small bowl, soak the dried fruits in sherry and let sit for at least 1 hour.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Allow it to sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  3. Add sugar, melted butter, warmed milk, and eggs to the yeast mixture. Stir to combine.
  4. Add half of the flour, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg to the wet mixture. Mix well.
  5. Stir in the soaked dried fruits along with any remaining sherry.
  6. Gradually add the remaining flour until a soft dough forms.
  7. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  8. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  9. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place in a greased loaf pan, cover, and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  10. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped on the bottom.
  11. Remove from the oven and let cool before slicing and serving.
