Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup pear preserves
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture in three parts, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
  5. Fold in the pear preserves and chopped walnuts, if desired.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and spread evenly.
  7. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
