Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1/2 pound ground sausage
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped bell pepper
  • 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon water

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a skillet, cook the ground sausage over medium heat until browned. Remove from the skillet and drain any excess grease.
  3. In the same skillet, sauté the onion and bell pepper until softened.
  4. In a bowl, combine the cooked sausage, sautéed onion and bell pepper, shredded cheddar cheese, garlic powder, dried thyme, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
  5. On a lightly floured surface, unfold the thawed puff pastry. Roll it out slightly to smooth any creases.
  6. Using a star-shaped cookie cutter, cut out star shapes from the puff pastry. Place half of the star shapes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  7. Spoon a small amount of the sausage filling onto each star shape on the baking sheet.
  8. Brush the edges of the star shapes with beaten egg, then place a second star shape on top of each filled star shape. Press the edges together to seal.
  9. In a small bowl, whisk together the beaten egg and water to make an egg wash. Brush the tops of the filled stars with the egg wash.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed.
  11. Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving.
  12. Serve the sausage-filled stars warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
