Ingredients

  • 1/2 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup red wine
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 bay leaf

Directions

  1. In a large pot, brown the ground beef and pork over medium heat until cooked through. Remove from the pot and set aside.
  2. In the same pot, sauté the onion and garlic until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, beef broth, red wine, sugar, salt, pepper, basil, parsley, red pepper flakes, and bay leaf to the pot.
  4. Stir to combine, then add the cooked meat back to the pot.
  5. Simmer the gravy uncovered for 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  6. Remove the bay leaf before serving over cooked pasta.
