Ingredients

  • 1 cup masur dahl (red lentils)
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Directions

  1. Rinse the masur dahl in cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. In a pot, add the washed lentils and 3 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer for 20 minutes.
  3. In a separate pan, heat some oil and add cumin seeds. When they start to sizzle, add the onions and sauté until translucent.
  4. Add the ginger and garlic, and cook for another minute. Then add the tomatoes, turmeric, red chili powder, and salt.
  5. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and the mixture is fragrant.
  6. Add the cooked lentils to the tomato mixture and stir well. Let it simmer for another 10 minutes.
  7. Add garam masala and adjust seasoning to taste.
  8. Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
  9. Serve hot with rice or bread.
