Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour an 8 inch square pan.
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt; stir into the creamed mixture alternately with the buttermilk. Fold in the cherries and almonds. Spread batter into prepared pan.
Bake for 35 to 40 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Let cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely.
